Our Story

In January 2010, Nature’s Alternative opened on Mack Avenue during Michigan’s earliest medical cannabis years. Patients were newly protected under state law, but safe access still depended on people willing to build it. In that caregiver era, the shop became a steady place for Detroiters seeking relief, education, and dignity around a plant long treated as taboo.

Those early years came with real uncertainty. The 2008 medical framework centered on the patient and caregiver relationship, not retail storefronts, and dispensary-style access existed in a shifting landscape of local enforcement and court decisions. In 2013, a Michigan Supreme Court decision reshaped how access could exist statewide, accelerating the push toward a clearer, more regulated system.

Nature’s Alternative remained part of Detroit’s early medical chapter through those changes, standing with patients as Michigan moved toward formal licensing and regulation in 2016, and then into voter-approved adult use legalization in 2018. The doors closed on October 31, 2018, marking the end of an era on Mack Avenue.

In winter 2026, that same location returns as Better Cannabis, continuing the mission in a new era: to provide a better alternative for Detroit, rooted in the belief that cannabis is medicine, and that access should be responsible, respectful, and real.

After watching how Michigan’s adult use market has evolved since 2018, we believe now is a better time than ever to introduce a new vision, guided by intention, respect, and a real love for the plant.
