How to Read a Cannabis Label

Cannabis labels pack a lot of information into a small space. Knowing what to look for makes it much easier to compare products and pick what fits you.

THC and CBD: percentage vs. milligrams

Flower and concentrates usually list cannabinoids as a percentage by weight (for example, THC %). Edibles, beverages and tinctures list them in milligrams (mg), because you're measuring a dose rather than a percentage of plant matter.

Total vs. per-serving

On edibles, check both the total milligrams in the package and the milligrams per serving. A package might hold 100mg total across ten 10mg pieces, the per-serving number is what matters when you're deciding how much to take.

Terpenes

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and character. Some labels list a terpene percentage or the dominant terpenes, which can help you find aromas and profiles you tend to enjoy.

Batch, test and weight info

  • Net weight (grams for flower/concentrate) or volume.
  • Strain name and type (indica, sativa, hybrid).
  • Package/batch identifiers and the universal Michigan THC warning symbol.

frequently asked questions

  • Not necessarily. THC percentage is one factor, but terpene profile, freshness, format and your own tolerance all shape the experience. A budtender can help you weigh them.

  • It's the amount of THC. Check both the total mg in the package and the mg per individual serving so you know how much one piece contains.
