Michigan Cannabis Laws: What to Know Before You Shop

Michigan legalized adult-use marijuana in 2018 through the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA). Here's a plain-English overview of what that means for shopping at a dispensary like Better Cannabis. This is general information, not legal advice, see the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency for the current, official rules.

Who can buy

Adult-use cannabis is available to anyone 21 or older with a valid, government-issued photo ID. You do not need a medical card to buy adult-use products, your ID is checked at every visit.

How much you can buy and possess

  • Purchase up to 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana per transaction.
  • Of that 2.5 ounces, no more than 15 grams may be in concentrate form.
  • You may carry up to 2.5 ounces in public and store up to 10 ounces at home.

Where you can use it

Consumption is allowed on private property with the owner's permission. It is not allowed in public places, in a vehicle, or on dispensary premises, and driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Taxes

Adult-use cannabis at retail carries a 10% excise tax plus Michigan's 6% sales tax, so tax is added on top of the listed price at checkout.
