Understanding THC and CBD

THC and CBD are the two cannabinoids you will see most often on a cannabis label. Knowing the basic difference makes it much easier to choose a product.

What THC is

THC is the main intoxicating compound in cannabis, the one responsible for the high. On flower it is usually listed as a percentage by weight, and on edibles and beverages it is listed in milligrams (mg) per serving.

What CBD is

CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning on its own it does not produce a high. Many people choose CBD or balanced products when they want a non-intoxicating option or a softer experience alongside THC.

Reading the numbers

  • Flower and concentrate: cannabinoids shown as a percentage.
  • Edibles and drinks: cannabinoids shown in milligrams (total and per serving).
  • Some products list a THC to CBD ratio, such as a balanced 1:1.

frequently asked questions

  • No. CBD is non-intoxicating, so on its own it does not produce a high. THC is the compound responsible for that effect.

  • It depends on your tolerance and goals. A higher percentage is not automatically better, and a thoughtful choice often weighs terpenes, format, and dose alongside THC.
